I dare you to put this book down. It had me on the edge of my seat from page one. Taylor Jenkins Reid has done it again- bringing characters to life in a way that had me researching astronauts in the 80s because they must be real, they’re so 3D. There were so many interesting through-lines in this book- religion, astronomy, music, being gay in the 80s, being gay in a high-level government role, motherhood, nonbiological parenthood, sexuality, sexism, feminism, and of course space and astronauts- all seamlessly woven together in a tremendously gorgeous love story. In so many ways, I’m grateful for this book.
Short summary: Joan has been obsessed with the stars as long as she can remember, so when NASA opens their interviews to women, she jumps at the chance to go to space. She has no idea how much she never dreamed of will come alongside that application.
